Proverbs 24:17-18 “Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice, 18 or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.”
God loves all of us. He does not delight in the perishing of the evil. In the perishing of evil, yes, but not the perishing of His creation that is doing evil. (Ezekiel 33:11) He desires everyone to be repent and love Him. (2 Peter 3:9) To delight in the destruction of those who are rebelling against God actually shows an absence of the love of God because Jesus died for the world. (John 3:16) He said that He came to seek and save the lost. (Luke 19:10) To not love the lost is to dishonor the grace we were saved by.
We know that the vast majority of the world rejects God and is therefore heading to perdition, but we don’t delight in that. No, if we have the love of God within we mourn for every soul that perishes. And if we don’t have the love of God within, than we are not His children and we are likewise perishing. (1 John 4:7-12) Love our enemy! Pray for them! Be kind to them, even though they may not deserve kindness. (Luke 6:27) For God is kind to us even though we don’t deserve His love and kindness. (1 Timothy 1:16) That includes even now, as we walk in His grace. (Hebrews 7:25) Love our enemy and be kind so that we will be like our God in Heaven who causes to rain on His children and on the unredeemed. (Matthew 5:43-48)
Let us always remember what Jesus taught and what God has always shown us. Didn’t Edom suffer for hating its neighbor (Obadiah 1:11-15) Let us not be like those who don’t love all of God’s creation, and especially who don’t love our brothers and sisters. No, we who are called by His name ought to help all that we are able to help and live as the children of our God ought to live. (Proverbs 3:27-28) Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, Oh man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Imitate God, not the world. Amen!
