Galatians 1:1 – “Paul, an apostle – sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead.”
John 3:18 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Romans 8:28-30 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”
Common questions are “Who am I? What is my purpose? What am I here to do? What is the meaning of life?” These are common questions that it is likely all people have had at one time or another (even if it was so long ago that some can’t remember). To some these questions seem unknowable. But none of them are. There are some easy answers to these questions that, while being personal, are also general.
If anyone is searching for true answers to these questions in any place but the Bible and from anyone other than God, then they need to revise their search. The true, the satisfying answers come only from God and His Word. You can search other places, you may even come to think you know the answer, but if you don’t get the answer from the Lord God, then you absolutely don’t have the answer.
Many find very noble, good and transcendent tasks in life to do, and then think that they have found the purpose to life. For example, they find a spouse and they believe their purpose in life is to love their spouse and to help that person have the best life they can have. Then they have a child and they think that now they have two purposes in life. Then, after some aging, our parents, or grandparents need help as they age, so some think that our purpose is also to take care of them, or siblings or other relatives. We all know that all these things are noble, good and pleasing in the eyes of God. And yes, the Lord God will have us to do these things, but none of them are our purpose in life or our identity.
“Who am I.” The only one worthy answer to have is I am a child of God. Are we all children of God? No, we are all God’s creation, but not until we are born again are we God’s children. (John 3:18)
“What is my purpose and what am I called to do?” It is to love the Lord our God with all that we are and to love each other. (Matthew 22:37-40) If we love the Lord we will obey Him. If we love each other then it will be a sacrificial love like the Lord has for us. (John 13:34-35) If we are living to love God and to love each other then we will be sharing the Gospel as Jesus instructed us to do. (Matthew 28:19-20) And we will love and care for each other.
King Solomon wrote “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) Jesus said in Mark 8:36 “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” At the end of our lives only one thing will matter and that is “what did with do with Jesus.” Eternal salvation is only through Him (Acts 4:12), and in the echoes of eternity, the only thing that will matter is if we loved the Lord, or not. Ultimately who we are is who God says we are. There are two categories: His children or not. That is easy enough.
So doing good deeds, even the best kind of deeds, saves no-one. Only Jesus saves and it our relationship with Him that determines who we are and what we should be doing. The wonderful thing about that is eternal life with God is offered to everyone. It is the best way. It is who we are and what we do. Really, God made it extremely easy. Follow Jesus and that is who we are and what we do. Easy. Praise God!
