Devotion Psalm 63:1 Whom Do We First Seek?

Psalm 63:1 – O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Too often it is too easy to focus on too many things.  As things slip from our fingers it is not a curse, but a blessing.  The less we have the more see what we do have.  It is harder to focus on one hundred things than ten things, or one thing.  A man of means wakes us and considers his many options of what he shall eat that morning.  A man with only one apple to eat need not wonder. When options are narrowed to a few, then the most important stands out.  A man with many consultants is more blessed than a man with none.  But the man with highest consultant, the One above all others, is the most blessed.  The man who runs to many to lament may find one who cares.  The man who has the One who always cares wastes little time in searching for comfort. A friend who is always there is better than ten that cannot be found (Proverbs 18:24).

Israel sought to have a king as other nations had, instead of keeping the Lord God Almighty as their Sovereign (1 Samuel 8:4-9).  Instead of choosing the One and the Only God, a search was made throughout their land for a man to be king.  Many choices.  The prophet Samuel warned them, as God had instructed him, that a man as their king has consequences.  They did not listen, they wanted what other nations had.  They settled for less.  They went from the best situation to a lesser, common one.  A king who is a man is fallible.  Having God as King has an infallible King.  The Jews chose wrong.  They rejected God and chose man.

Man feels the need for many counselors.  Wise counselors are a good thing (Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 19:20).  A believer is wise who does not seek ungodly counsel (Psalm 1:1, Isaiah 30:1-2).  Those who are not lovers of Christ don’t understand the things of Christ and so how can they be a counsellor about things of the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:18-19).  Though it is wise to seek Godly counsel, it is best to seek the counsel of God.  He is the only omniscient One.  Why do we first seek counsel from other men instead of first seeking it from God?  Since He is our greatest comfort, why do we go to another first?  The wisest counsel that one man can give is to point one back to God.  Why not go straight to God?  God is our first and only completely able helper (Psalm 54:4, John 14:26, Hebrews 13:6).

God grants us to seek Godly wisdom from others.  He uses man to help man.  It is best to first seek God.  He may lead us to a man for the answer, but that in itself is an answer.  It is best to first seek God (Matthew 6:33) and to let Him direct us (Isaiah 48:17).  Seek all things first from God and do and seek as He says.  I am blessed to know many Godly men.  Yet I always first cry out to God.  I am His servant, so I want to know what my Lord and Master has to say before what others have to say.  Still, be wise, Godly counsel, as the Word says, is wise.

God is wanting and waiting to teach and guide us.  Every day, and throughout every day, first seek God for His love, His wisdom, His guidance, and then seek out help from men as the Lord guides.  Have we sought God today?  If not, no time like the present.  While alive on this earth it is never too late.  God loves us.  Let’s walk in His love and be whole.  Praise God!

Psalm 150:6 – Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.  Praise the Lord!

Micah 7:7 – But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.

Micah 6:8 – He has shown You, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of You but to do justly, to love mercy, And to walk humbly with Your God.
