Revelation 9:1-12<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/b>The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.\u00a0The star was given the key\u00a0to the shaft of the Abyss.<\/span>\u00a02\u00a0When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.\u00a0The sun and sky were darkened\u00a0by the smoke from the Abyss.<\/span>\u00a03\u00a0And out of the smoke locusts\u00a0came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions\u00a0of the earth.<\/span>\u00a04\u00a0They were told not to harm\u00a0the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,\u00a0but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.<\/span>\u00a05\u00a0They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.\u00a0And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion\u00a0when it strikes.<\/span>\u00a06\u00a0During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.\u00a0 7\u00a0The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.\u00a0On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.<\/span>\u00a08\u00a0Their hair was like women\u2019s hair, and their teeth were like lions\u2019 teeth.<\/span>\u00a09\u00a0They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.<\/span>\u00a010\u00a0They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.11\u00a0They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,\u00a0whose name in Hebrew\u00a0is Abaddon\u00a0and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).\u00a0 12\u00a0The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.\u00a0 The star was given the key\u00a0to the shaft of the Abyss<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0 Who, or what was the \u201cstar\u201d that fell from the sky to the earth.\u00a0 John does not here give us the answer.\u00a0 Previously, in\u00a0Revelation 8:10<\/b>\u00a0it also states that a \u201cstar\u201d fell from the sky (It damaged fresh waters on the earth).\u00a0 That star is in all appearances, not a person or a being. However, this star is different.\u00a0 This star is given a key.\u00a0 That would lead us to believe this star is a person or a being.\u00a0 But who, or what?<\/p>\n

It is believed that this is either Satan, or one of his subordinates.\u00a0\u00a0Isaiah 14:12-15<\/b>\u00a0may give a clue that it is Satan that is seen here.\u00a0 In\u00a0Luke 10:18<\/b>\u00a0Jesus tells \u201cI saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0 Some use these verses to say it is Satan Himself who is referenced here.\u00a0 Though these verses may seem convincing, we must remember that John does not identify that it is Satan.\u00a0 That John does not attribute this star to be Satan seems to be, in and of itself, a kind of proof that it is not.\u00a0 John is not shy about identifying Satan as he does seven times in this book (Revelation 2:9, 2:13, 2:24, 3:9, 12:9, 20:2\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a020:7<\/b>).<\/p>\n

The star may be actual angel.\u00a0 Notice that the star itself is not bringing the judgement, but is merely doing the will of the Lord and releasing the demons from the Abyss.\u00a0 This could be the identity of the \u201cstar.\u201d\u00a0 But, if so, why would the star\u2019s descent to earth be referred to as \u201cfallen?\u201d\u00a0 Fallen brings with it not something like a controlled descent, but a forced descent that comes from loss of position.\u00a0 Therefore, it would seem to not be an angel.<\/p>\n

The fallen star would seem to be a subordinate demon, though like anything in the Bible that is not clearly stated, dogma should not be applied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe star was given<\/span>.\u201d It is an important point that John repeatedly points out.\u00a0 That the perpetrators bringing the judgement may only do so as they are \u201cgiven\u201d the right to do so.\u00a0 God is in control.\u00a0 Always He is in control.\u00a0 This is evident as these judgements often have limits on them.\u00a0 God is in control.\u00a0 He always has been, always will be and always shall be.\u00a0 In that we have comfort.\u00a0 Praise the Lord!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026given the key\u00a0to the shaft of the Abyss<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0 The \u201ckey to the shaft\u201d is not an actual key, but represents authority.\u00a0\u00a0 He is given the authority to release the demons that are imprisoned in the Abyss.\u00a0 The Apostle Paul used the same word \u201cabyssos\u201d (transliteration) in\u00a0Romans 10:7<\/b>.\u00a0 He used it to refer as an abode of the dead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0Luke 8:26-31<\/b>\u00a0Jesus cast demons from a man they had possessed.\u00a0 There were so many demons in this man that they were called \u201cLegion.\u201d\u00a0 A legion, depending on the time period and who was included in the count, ranged anywhere from about one thousand to over five thousand.\u00a0 This possessed man was terrifying.\u00a0 They kept him chained hand and foot, but he would break his chains.\u00a0 The demons in this man, when seeing Jesus, ran to him, fell at His feet and begged for Jesus not to \u201ctorture\u201d them or to order them in the \u201cAbyss,\u201d or the deep.\u00a0 Thus the Abyss was also a place where demons were often kept imprisoned.\u00a0 Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia says this word designates \u201cthe farthest possible position downward\u201d or \u201cthe remote opposite of heaven.\u201d\u00a0 Heaven is where the God resides.\u00a0 These demons (the worst of the worst?\u201d are imprisoned in the Abyss.\u00a0 These demons who are evil are imprisoned as far away from God who is good as possible. In fact, in a real sense, they are so far away as to seem infinitely so.\u00a0 The difference between these demons and their lord Satan (who also will later spend time in the Abyss) from the Lord God is infinite. \u00a0Meanings of the original word include bottomless, unbounded and immeasurable, and so is the distance between God and evil.\u00a0 So will be the final distance between those who reject God and God.\u00a0 There is no hope of salvation for those who have rejected Jesus as Savior and Lord and died in their sins.\u00a0 There is no way back.\u00a0 Such is the abyss. \u00a0Also such is the Lake of Fire that was prepared for the devil and his demons (Matthew 25:41, Revelation 20:10<\/b>), and will unfortunately will be the final abode for all who reject Jesus (Revelation 20:15<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n

For those who love the Lord, who have given their lives to Him, they shall forever live with God (1 Thessalonians 4:17<\/b>), in His peace and His love.\u00a0 Family that is our fate!\u00a0 Praise God!\u00a0 What we see that will happen as related in Revelation is a constant reminded that Jesus said there are only two options for the final disposition for the soul of man.\u00a0 They are one is either with Jesus, or against Him (Matthew 12:30, Luke 11:23<\/b>). Jesus says that there are no other options.\u00a0 Praise God that we belong to Jesus. Let us pray for each other and let us also remember to pray for those who do not.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 150:6<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.\u00a0 Praise the Lord!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
