John 7:40-53\u00a0<\/b>–\u00a0<\/sup><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/b><\/span>Some\u00a0of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, \u201cThis truly is\u00a0the Prophet.\u201d\u00a041\u00a0Others were saying, \u201cThis is the\u00a0Christ.\u201d But others were saying, \u201cSurely the\u00a0Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He?\u00a042\u00a0Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from\u00a0the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?\u201d\u00a043\u00a0So\u00a0a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him.\u00a044\u00a0And\u00a0some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 45\u00a0The\u00a0officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, \u201cWhy did you not bring Him?\u201d\u00a046\u00a0The\u00a0officers answered, \u201cNever has a man spoken in this way!\u201d\u00a047\u00a0The Pharisees then replied to them, \u201cYou have not been led astray too, have you?\u00a048\u00a0Not one of\u00a0the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?\u00a049\u00a0But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!\u201d\u00a050\u00a0Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them,\u00a051\u00a0\u201cOur Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?\u201d\u00a052\u00a0They answered and said to him, \u201cYou are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine\u00a0the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.\u201d\u00a053\u00a0And everyone went to his home.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cSome\u00a0of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, \u201cThis truly is\u00a0the Prophet.\u201d\u00a041\u00a0Others were saying, \u201cThis is the\u00a0Christ.\u201d But others were saying, \u201cSurely the\u00a0Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He?\u00a042\u00a0Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from\u00a0the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?\u201d\u00a043\u00a0So\u00a0a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0After listening to Jesus and seeing the miracles He had performed some of the people thought that He was the prophet that Moses had told them would come after him. (Deuteronomy 18:15<\/b>) Others thought that He was the Christ.\u00a0\u00a0So there was a group who believed what Jesus said.\u00a0\u00a0Not that they necessarily were His disciples, but at least they were moved by the Lord and curious to know more.\u00a0\u00a0Unlike others among them.<\/p>\n

Some were saying this is not the Christ because Jesus came from Galilee and the Messiah would not come from Galilee.\u00a0\u00a0Isn\u2019t it like those in authority to express their opinions, or what they have heard, as fact when actually they don\u2019t know the facts? Error they have been learned and so they teach what they have learned but what is, in fact, incorrect.\u00a0\u00a0The Jews from Jerusalem, being self-righteous, believed that the Messiah would, like them, come from the Judean area.\u00a0\u00a0They thought their area was where scholars and priests came from and so must the Messiah. Yet they were wrong in various ways.\u00a0\u00a0They thought, but were wrong in thinking Nazareth was where Jesus was born, which would make Him a Galilean.\u00a0\u00a0Actually Jesus was born among them in Bethlehem,in Judea. (Matthew 2:1-6<\/b>)\u00a0\u00a0So, by their reasoning, the birthplace of Jesus did not deny that He was Messiah, but by their reasoning, should have caused His birthplace to give weight to the fact that Jesus was the Messiah.\u00a0\u00a0And the belief of where their Messiah would be born was wrong by their own Scripture. (Micah 5:2<\/b>)\u00a0\u00a0He was raised in Nazareth in Galilee, but He was born in Bethlehem just south of Jerusalem. Isn\u2019t it odd those who are not confident of their situation, or are lying, can so confidently assert their situation and spread deadly lies?<\/p>\n

Beware the person who says believe me because of my school or lineage.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, believe the one who can prove their beliefs by the Word.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd\u00a0some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.<\/i>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0John 7:30\u00a0<\/b>we also see that the authorities sought to arrest Jesus, but they could not, because it was not in the Father\u2019s timing.\u00a0\u00a0See also\u00a0John 8:20<\/b>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, \u201cWhy did you not bring Him?\u00a046\u00a0The\u00a0officers answered, \u201cNever has a man spoken in this way!\u201d\u00a047\u00a0The Pharisees then replied to them, \u201cYou have not been led astray too, have you? 48\u00a0Not one of\u00a0the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?\u00a0\u201d<\/i>\u201d These officers, sent out to arrest Jesus, were employed by the chief priests and Pharisees.\u00a0\u00a0But once they listened to Jesus, and heard from the \u201cpeople of the land\u201d what signs Jesus had performed, they just could not arrest Him.\u00a0\u00a0Though they may not have ever become disciples of Jesus, they listened with open ears and were at least moved enough, and intuitive enough, to not rise up and arrest Him even if the leaders of their government told them to. In our day we need such people who will not do evil even if ordered to by their superiors.\u00a0\u00a02 Chronicles 16:9a<\/b>\u00a0\u201cFor the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0In our day, though many say they are committed to the Lord, is the gate still narrow?\u00a0\u00a0The authorities forced themselves to hell and dragged as many as they could with them. (Matthew 23:15<\/b>)\u00a0\u00a0The authorities would not believe and forbade others to believe and be saved.\u00a0\u00a0Misery loves company but in hell, no company will be able to help.\u00a0\u00a0But those who lead others to Jesus shall eternally enjoy the bliss of the eternal company of our Savior and Lord Jesus.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0Again the authorities say to believe in them because of their scholarship and authority.\u00a0\u00a0Those who don\u2019t listen to them, the authorities say, must be under a curse from God.\u00a0\u00a0Well, isn\u2019t that the pot calling the kettle black?<\/p>\n

\u201cNicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them,\u00a051\u00a0\u201cOur Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?\u201d\u00a0<\/i>The Pharisees had just said that none of them believed in Jesus and now, here is Nicodemus, though softly, speaking up for Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0He reminded them that a man cannot be condemned without first a trial in which He can call witnesses and speak in His own defense.\u00a0\u00a0He is reminding them who are condemning Jesus that in fact they are the law breakers by what they plan to do to Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0Hypocrisy is a sin with deadly potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey answered and said to him, \u201cYou are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine\u00a0the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0The one man amongst them who honestly sought Jesus out to hear him, they immediately turned against him because he dared to not believe what his own were saying.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps they were truly no longer his own?\u00a0\u00a0Be careful of those who demand you follow without thinking.\u00a0\u00a0The Apostle Paul praised the Bereans for searching out the truth in the scriptures. (Acts 17:11<\/b>) Don\u2019t trust anyone who will not allow you to consider a matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd everyone went to his home.<\/i>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Everyone went to their homes.\u00a0\u00a0Where did Jesus go to?\u00a0\u00a0He was readying Himself to go to His home, with His Father.\u00a0\u00a0Praise God!<\/p>\n

Psalm 150:6<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.\u00a0 Praise the Lord!<\/i><\/p>\n

Micah 7:7<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0But as for me, I watch\u00a0in hope\u00a0for the\u00a0Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will Hear\u00a0me.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Micah 6:8<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0He has\u00a0shown you, Oh man, what\u00a0is\u00a0good; and what does the\u00a0Lord\u00a0require of you, but\u00a0to do justly, to love\u00a0mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.<\/i><\/p>\n
