John 2:1-12\u00a0<\/b>–\u00a0On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.\u00a0Jesus\u2019 mother\u00a0was there,<\/i><\/span>\u00a02\u00a0and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.<\/span>\u00a03\u00a0When the wine was gone, Jesus\u2019 mother said to him, \u201cThey have no more wine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>4\u00a0\u201cWoman,\u00a0why do you involve me?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Jesus replied.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMy hour\u00a0has not yet come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>5\u00a0His mother said to the servants, \u201cDo whatever he tells you.\u201d 6\u00a0Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,\u00a0each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7\u00a0Jesus said to the servants,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFill the jars with water\u201d<\/span>; so they filled them to the brim. 8\u00a0Then he told them,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNow draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>They did so,<\/span>\u00a09\u00a0and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.\u00a0He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside<\/span>\u00a010\u00a0and said, \u201cEveryone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.\u201d 11\u00a0What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs\u00a0through which he revealed his glory;\u00a0and his disciples believed in him. 12\u00a0After this he went down to Capernaum\u00a0with his mother\u00a0and brothers\u00a0and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the wine was gone, Jesus\u2019 mother said to him, \u201cThey have no more wine.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0We observe that when an urgent need arose Mary knew who to go to.\u00a0\u00a0She didn\u2019t consult with people before going to Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0She didn\u2019t think that she could take care of it and she didn\u2019t think \u201cWhy bother Jesus?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0No, she went straight to Jesus because she knew He would help her.\u00a0\u00a0She knew He could help her.\u00a0\u00a0The purpose of the jars of water would be changed.\u00a0\u00a0They would become vessels to disperse new and more excellent wine.\u00a0\u00a0After being born again our terrestrial bodies move from being a host to earthly passion to being a vessel that holds the wine of the Holy Spirit that is given to all who humble themselves unto to the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0The time of the Law and Prophets had fulfilled their purpose and then was the time for full and complete redemption through their long awaited, and promised Messiah.\u00a0\u00a0All along the Law and Prophets had pointed to the Messiah and then He came, Jesus came.\u00a0\u00a0John the Baptist had a like ministry of pointing to the coming Jesus and when Jesus started His ministry, John bowed and stepped back for Jesus to take center stage.\u00a0\u00a0This how it was meant to be.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0All who love God bow before Him.\u00a0\u00a0As John informed and pointed to Jesus, likewise it is the ministry of all who love and serve Him today.\u00a0\u00a0I like to think of page bowing and pointing to his sovereign on the throne for the guest to see.\u00a0\u00a0How much more do we point to the eternal Sovereign?<\/span><\/p>\n

One commentator speculated that Mary had an ulterior motive for asking Jesus to resolve this problem.\u00a0\u00a0That perhaps, after the critical looks and the whispered accusations she had endured as a result of the Immaculate Conception, perhaps the people could see the truth of whom she had bore when Jesus did this miracle.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps Him doing the miraculous then would vindicate her as people could see that her son was the Son of God.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus in doing the miracle, was maybe being kind to His mother who had endured horrible looks and likely, some ostracizing.\u00a0\u00a0Interesting, but not written down. Still, if so, could you blame her?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>\u201cWoman,\u00a0why do you involve me?\u201d<\/i><\/span>\u00a0Jesus replied.\u00a0<\/i><\/span>\u201cMy hour\u00a0has not yet come.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/span>5\u00a0His mother said to the servants, \u201cDo whatever he tells you.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0To us, in our day, it sounds like Jesus spoke to His mother harshly. But we must remember that it was a different time and His words were not meant to be harsh.\u00a0\u00a0The word used her for woman,\u00a0<\/span>gun\u00e9, was the same word He used when expressing a caring moment for her in\u00a0John 19:<\/b><\/span>26<\/b>\u00a0\u201cWhen Jesus saw His mother\u00a0there, and the disciple whom He loved\u00a0standing nearby, He said to her,\u00a0\u201cWoman, here is your son,\u201d\u00a027\u00a0and to the disciple,\u00a0\u201cHere is your mother.\u201d\u00a0From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0At this moment He spoke lovingly to her.\u00a0\u00a0We can be sure that He would not speak disrespectfully to her at the wedding.\u00a0\u00a0To do so would not honor her and He would not break the fifth commandment. (Exodus 20:12<\/b>).<\/p>\n

If Jesus had rebuked her, would she have then confidently turned to the servants and told them to do whatever Jesus would tell them.\u00a0\u00a0No, instead she knew He would act in love just as He always did.\u00a0\u00a0She was confident that her loving and respectful son would continue to be so to her.<\/p>\n

Another thing, our Father is a perfect parent and no wise father would want his children to dishonor their mother.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0No, Jesus honored her.\u00a0\u00a0He reminded her that His Father had an \u201chour\u201d for Him, a specific time.\u00a0\u00a0Nevertheless, He blessed His mother whom He loved.<\/p>\n

There are many lessons to learn from this scripture.\u00a0\u00a0I like that Jesus blessed His mother and the first public miracle that He did was to be tender to His mother.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a great example for us.\u00a0\u00a0Love our parents and honor them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus did.\u00a0\u00a0Praise God!<\/p>\n

Psalm 150:6<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.\u00a0 Praise the Lord!<\/p>\n

Micah 7:7<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0But as for me, I watch\u00a0in hope\u00a0for the\u00a0Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will Hear\u00a0me.<\/p>\n

Micah 6:8<\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0He has\u00a0shown you, Oh man, what\u00a0is\u00a0good; and what does the\u00a0Lord\u00a0require of you, but\u00a0to do justly, to love\u00a0mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.<\/p>\n
